A Look Back (in cartoons)

Personal, Thoughts No Comments
I don’t have to tell you what anniversary today marks. Many people today are telling the stories of what they were doing on that day. I can clearly remember that morning. I won’t go into the story here because it’s no different from all the other stories. However, at the time I was getting ready to begin my senior year at Oregon State University. I was a cartoonist for our school’s newspaper, The Daily Barometer. It was a very interesting time being a cartoonist for a college paper. Below are a couple cartoons from that school year. The drawings are very crude, but the writing was good (I thought).

Printed September 28, 2001. I saw this cartoon posted on a number of student's dorm room walls.

Published April of 2002. This cartoon was more for me than my readers. Amazing how only 7 months after the incident I already started to forget.

Parting of the Red Sea colored

Illustration Friday, Thoughts 4 Comments
Well, I’ve been working on this one all week, and I’m not sure if it’s done. I thought I’d post it anyways. Speaking of nature acting in unnatural ways, LOST is on!! UPDATE: I’m submitting this to this week’s Illustration Friday topic: “Breezy”. A while back I watched a Discovery Channel show that gave a scientific explanation to some of the miracles in the Old Testament. I’ve always found this stuff very interesting. To me, a scientific explanation to a miracle doesn’t make it any less of a miracle. In fact, it only reinforces the miraculousness of God using natural events for His purpose. However, the particular episode I watched talked about the parting of the Red Sea, and gave an explanation as to how this could have happened naturally. They hypothesized that a large wind (or “breeze”) came down and blew the sea down, revealing an underwater ridge, which the Israelites used to cross. I saw a problem when they said that the “breeze” had to be over 100 mph sustained. Wouldn’t this blow people into the water (especially children and the elderly)? I’m not trying to start a debate—only providing an explanation as to why this illustration fits with this week’s Illustration Friday topic: “Breezy”.

Blessing in disguise?

I drew this quick sketch the other day while watching the news and hearing about all the hardships people across the country are facing this Christmas season. For many people it’s going to be a hard one. People are forced to scale back their holiday buying and gift giving. The ironic thing is, for me, the economic collapse is really causing me to focus more on why I celebrate this holiday. It’s not about buying, or getting the best, most expensive gifts. I remember hearing my grandma tell me how joyful it was to receive an orange in her stocking on Christmas morning, and I hear the same types of stories from my wife’s grandpa. Just something to think about.

If you want to know why I celebrate this season just ask (or watch “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. It’s on tomorrow night at 8pm!! Yay!!)
